Lead with Purpose

Mother Teresa, Gandhi, The Pope, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, all the great leaders in the stories that we have learned from are unique but not dissimilar to us.

Most people have the ability to be this great – Greatness is in the core of us all.  We are all born with similar traits that allow us to be great when we are ready to seize the opportunity.

Most people never take the opportunity because they either fear the unknown or lack enough confidence.  People hold themselves back – They don’t take the chances because they don’t understand their strengths.  Unfortunately, most people sadly follow the road that is dictated to them instead of dictating their own path in life.

How many people do you know that have followed in their father’s footsteps?

Why is not taking charge a common theme?

It’s not easy to make a choice – Most people won’t – Its hard making critical decisions – most people don’t have the confidence.  Choices are made for them instead of making choices for themselves.  It is safer to follow the crowd than to go alone into the unknown.

We praise our leaders because of their courage and because of their choices.  This greatness that we admire is in all of us – Same DNA, same human abilities, same mental structure.

The difference is the self-awareness of understanding strengths, recognizing weaknesses, and an ability to overcome fear.  Once these are recognized you can make your own decisions.

People are afraid to make the change – it becomes uncomfortable thinking about the unknown future – we try to create certainty.  Abraham Lincoln was the master of paradox and enshrined as one of the greatest leaders of all-time – we all have the ability to face fear and live in the paradox – most of us don’t have the courage to do it.

Why don’t we? What causes barriers?

Is it fear or uncertainty avoidance? Is it the need for safety?

History says if you don’t change you die – Evolution says you have to adapt to the new situation

I say, Lead with purpose, prevent problems by reacting before they happen instead of afterwards.  Don’t be a yes-man and follow the crowd – have a voice, be valuable, live your life the way you want.
